2.Installing ArcReader10
Purpose
Use this procedure to (1) install the ArcReader10 program and (2) access the Published Map File (PMF) located on the server by creating a shortcut on your desktop.
Note: ArcReader10 is available as a free download from ESRI
Procedure
- Browse to and open the
ArcReader10Windows
installation folder located in theGIS_Data
directory on your server. - Double-click on the setup application to install the ArcReader10 program, which you will use to view the PMF. Follow the Installation Wizard with the default selections and perform a Complete installation.
- When the program installation is complete, browse to the
GIS_Data
folder on the server and locate the ESRI Published Map with your county name. - To create a shortcut on your desktop, right-click on the file CountyName.pmf and select Send To…, then select Desktop (Create Shortcut).
How the Published Map File works: The PMF file references the GIS shapefiles contained in the
TA_Data
folder, including a new ownership shapefile. In addition, the PMF accesses a web service for the use of aerial imagery. The Aerials layer will only work with an internet connection.Note: To run the map on a remote computer or provide this functionality to others entities, the remote computer requires the ArcReader10 installation and a copy of the
TA_Data
folder and PMF file. The PMF is not connected to PACS or the live PACS database. The information in the
TA_Data
folder is updated weekly by LPS True Automation GIS Services.
Next Steps
Double-clicking on the desktop shortcut will start ArcReader10 and open the county PMF.
3.Using ArcReader10
Purpose
The following is a quick overview of basic ArcReader10 functionality.
Procedure
Viewing Maps in ArcReader10
- Double-click on the PMF shortcut on your desktop.
Note: This program takes a few moments to startup because a significant amount of data is loaded into the computer’s temporary memory. Performance may vary based on computer system and network variables.
When you open the PMF, the map displays a map of the county overlaid with school districts and city limits. The display on the left side of the screen includes list of map layers available for viewing. A toolbar with various buttons displays at the top of the screen.
Using ArcReader 10
Layers and Zoom Levels
- Notice the check boxes next to each map layer in the table of contents on the left side of the screen. Selecting a check box makes the corresponding layers visible on the map. Use the check box to display the map layers you want to show when viewing and creating custom maps.
- Notice the (+) and (-) options displayed near the check boxes. Use the (+) and (-) options to expand and minimize the list of contents within each layer.
- Certain layers listed in the table of contents are color-coded, indicating the corresponding color used on the map. This helps users quickly identify features such as parcels, streets, school districts, and subdivisions.
Note: The PMF is configured to display layers and labels at different zoom levels. This improves display information whether you are zooming in or out on the map. For instance, the parcel layer and labels for each parcel do not show at the county-wide scale because this data and text would clutter the map. Once you zoom closer to an area of the county or a neighborhood, the parcels display with owner name, property id, and lot\block numbers for quick identification.
- The Zoom Control is highlighted on the toolbar displayed below. In this example, the ratio 1:334,636.
- The map is configured to make layers and labels visible at the zoom levels listed below.

4.ArcReader10 Common Tools
Purpose
The following is a list defining items represented in the toolbar.
Procedure
- Use the following tools as needed to manipulate maps displayed with ArcReader10:
Zoom In\Out, Continuous Zoom\Pan, Fixed Zoom In\Out
Pan – Grab and move map around
Full Extent – County wide view of map. Best viewed when School and City Limits layer are displayed
Go to the previous extent – Move forward and backward similar to an internet browser
Identify – Display feature or attributes associated with parcels such as address, owner, value, etc.
Find – Search for specific feature such as parcel with a specific owner or address
Go to XY – Find a coordinate by Long: Lat: Degrees Minutes Seconds
Measure – Measure the distance between two points or measure the area within a defined area
Select Layer to edit transparency or swipe
Transparency – Increase or decrease color density of layer
Swipe Layer – Peel back layer to see information underneath (i.e. imagery)
Markup tools – Pen, Highlighter, and Erase
Print Icon to print the map
- The two very small buttons
at the bottom allow you to toggle back and forth between Data View and Layout View.
- Users can copy or export the map by choosing the following:
a) Edit > Copy – Copy and paste map to another program such as Paint or MS Word
b) File > Export Map – Save as a Bitmap image for use in other programs, including email attachment.

5.Examples of Using ArcReader10
Purpose
The following examples demonstrate various uses of ArcReader10 functionality.
Procedures
Using the Find function
Find results are based on the feature or layer selected.
Example 1
The example below shows a search for a property identification number in Ownership Information
.
- Find:
Property ID
- In:
Ownership Information
- Search: All fields: In this example, the system searches all fields for the number 99475. The ID number only exists in PROP_ID
- Search: In fields: Select this option to search in specific fields
Example 2
The example below shows a search for a property owner’s name in Ownership Information
.
- Find: Williams
- In:
Ownership Information
- Search: All fields: (a) In this example, the system searches all field for the name
Williams
.Williams
exists in the fieldslegal_desc
file_as_na
addr_line1
- Search: In field: (b) Select this option to search specific fields, thereby narrowing the scope of the search. To only search by owner name, change the In field selection to
file_as_na
(a)
(b)
Using the Identify function
Identify results are based on the feature or layer selected.
Example 1
This example shows how to use the Identify tool to select a property for additional information.
- Click Identify tool
- In the Identify from drop-down list, choose
Ownership Information
- Click on or drag a box over a property on the map you want to identify
The Identify window displays
Ownership Information
for the selected property.
Using imagery
The Aerials
layer 2010 Color Imagery
.
- Tip: Locate and center the map on the general area you want to view before you turn on imagery. Turning on the Aerials layer while navigating the map decreases performance.
- Imagery is best viewed with only the Streets and Parcel layers on.
Using Select Layer tool
Example 1
In this example, Select Layer is used to adjust Transparency and/or Swipe.
- Use the Transparency tool
to lighten the Parcel layer.
- Drag the Transparency slide bar to adjust the percentage of map transparency.
- Use the Swipe tool
to view imagery beneath the Parcel layer.
- Select the Swipe tool and drag up, down, or sideways to swipe the layer.
The Transparency and Swipe tools can be used on any layer by selecting the layer from the drop-down list
Example 2
The image below shows the Swipe tool used with the Abstract layer.
Using the Lots and Measure layers
Example 1
The Lots layer displays the length of each line segment, measured in feet.
Use the Measure tool to measure line segment, perimeter, and area.
- Click on the line end point, and then the next point.
- Double-click on the last point to complete the measurement.
Using Markup Tools
Example 1
Use the Markup Tools to make temporary notations on the map. Markup can be erased at any time. All markings are overwritten when the Published Map File is updated.
6.Start Using ArcReader10 and Published Map File
For convenience, each time users open the PMF, the original map of the county is displayed (as shown in Using ArcReader10). You can then work with the map by following the instructions in this guide. The instructions in this guide do not include the details of every layer or tool available. For detailed information, see the ArcReader Help menu in the application’s toolbar.
We recommend users experiment with different views, extents, and layers to become familiar with the mapping capabilities. Exploring ArcReader10 and the PMF reveals the potential its functionality has to help your office search for properties and print maps. The PMF allows you to easily share your GIS Data with other offices and bring additional value to the Appraisal District in your county.
We hope this benefits your office and helps facilitate your mapping requests. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact LPS True Automation GIS Department at 972.881.1858 or email Tracy Rodriguez, GIS Manager, tracy.rodriguez@lpsvcs.com.
